Are Gray Aliens Just Humans from the Underground?

*Author’s note: I have zero answers, but my favorite word is “maybe.”

I’ve been thinking about gray aliens. Because no one has any definitive proof that they exist, most of their image in folklore and pop culture is based on witness descriptions, cinematic interpretations, and that (nightmare-fuel) cover of Whitley Strieber’s book.

Much like Bigfoot, we have yet to see Gray in 4K. But the way these creatures are often described as having somewhat human-ish features, but with huge eyes and pale skin, makes me wonder: Are gray aliens the future us? Not the us that we’re familiar with, though, — the us that has destroyed the planet to the point that we have to live underground.

Think about the subterranean and/or nocturnal species that we currently know exist: They have pale, almost translucent skin. Their eyes are either huge, or they don’t exist at all. If these species of animals have adapted to a world of total darkness, why wouldn’t humans?

Some theories out there hypothesize that gray alien eyes aren’t eyes at all, but sunglasses or some type of futuristic shield. This would make perfect sense if they do sometimes need to travel into the light. For whatever of ife that still exists above ground, they need to shield their dark-sensitive eyes or they’ll go blind.

And the skin, well, who needs a tan when you live in the crust of the earth?

We know that evolution takes thousands of years, which means that maybe these future subterranean humans have also had plenty of time to perfect time travel. Maybe they’re pissed that we did this to them. Maybe they want to frolic in the lavender fields like they see ancient humans doing in those old medicine ads.

Maybe they’re here to tell us to get out shit together, people.

Turns out, the time travel part of my theory isn’t an original thought. I was doing some cursory research and came across a book by Dr. Michael P. Masters called Identified Flying Objects: A Multidisciplinary Scientific Approach to the UFO Phenomenon, where he also posits that the grays are future humans.

He refers to them as “extratempestrials,” which means that they’re not out of space, but out of time, and points out characteristics that track with what I’ve been thinking: They’re fluent in English, their faces are similar enough, they’re bipedal, and their tech is also kind of like ours but, well, alien.

According to Masters, these future humans could be anthropologists from the future, or even just tourists. (Who would want to go to the ancient human museum when they can go to the actual ancient humans?)

Maybe the grays are trapped on a planet that’s destroyed and trying desperately to change the timeline. Maybe they’re the 1-percenters of the (way far in the) future who have a private time machine and a penchant for history.

Maybe we’re both a little bit right.

If you’d like to go down this rabbit hole with someone who’s actually done the research, read Masters’ book. I also recommend Travels Through Time by Mike Ricksecker, one of the smartest people I’ve had the pleasure to meet.

What do you think the grays are? Will we ever find out?
